MUSIC THEORY I
COURSE DESCRIPTION:
In this course, we will study the fundamentals of music theory, including pitch, intervals, key signatures, before moving on into exploring basic harmonic function, triads and seventh chords and their inversions, harmonic function, and multi-voice harmonic motion. Music theory is a crucial element of your education as a musician. A deep understanding of musical organization will only enrich your musical journey and appreciation for the works you study and perform.

Textbook: Clendinning, Jane Piper and Marvin, Elizabeth West. The Musician’s Guide to Theory and Analysis 4th Edition
Pencil with a trusty eraser (we will all need it from time to time)

Week Three: Intervals II (Augmented, Diminished, Inversions)
Week Four: Basic Counterpoint (Note-to-Note First Species)
Week Five: Major Keys and Scales
Week Six: Minor Keys and Scales
Week Seven: Triads and Chord Grammar I (Major, Minor, Augmented, Diminished Traids)
