My Clarinet Quartet is in four uninterrupted sections

I. Break
II. Float
III. Churn
IV. Connect

I have long been interested in many wide-ranging styles of orchestral classical music, from the music of Carter and Boulez to Higdon and Copland. In the summer of 2014, I quite honestly felt lost on the concept of what does my music mean to me, what does my music mean to others, and maybe even where does my music fit in? The goal of this piece is to, in one way or another, create one solid work that successfully combines these two somewhat polarizing musical styles.

My Clarinet Quartet opens with a very spastic explosion of 6 notes which becomes the key motive throughout the piece. The notes themselves are wildly chromatic and belong more to the Carter side of my brain. However, as the piece goes along, these notes transform into different textures (i.e. the movement titles, break, churn, etc.) until the very end when the previous chromatic tones and motives become connected in a tonal harmonic context.
