A SPICING OF BIRDS

ensemble: clarinet in Bb (doubling kick drum), 'cello, and piano
duration: 6 minutes
written: fall 2016
written for: Split The Lark
premiered: August 6, 2018; Boston, MA

The title, A Spicing of Birds, comes from an anthology of Emily Dickinson poems, the same poet which coined the namesake of the new music ensemble Split the Lark. Beyond the title/ensemble connection, the piece is not necessarily influenced by Dickinson's poetry. Rather, the piece is a brief romp that pits chirpy, twittering bird flourishes against sudden, possibly obnoxious interruptions.
